Semi Set Vertical Blue
Semi Set Vertical Blue, jacquard tapestry (digital weave) in cotton and wool blend, installed on
a plywood platform with nylon rope, clamps, plastic rod. 6m x 2m x 1mm. 2017
Semi Set Vertical Blue: the material provided its conceptual beginning. In this piece, I speak to the common act of scrolling, the vertical element evident online as well as in weaving, where the vertical warp-threads are the near-unending dimension in a tapestry’s construction. I have long been impressed by this infinite internet property - that information can be added on to any ‘page’ without limitation, and when considering my typical relationship to a page, I realized I am constrained by the dimensions of paper. This problem was solved when researching jacquard tapestry. A weaving is its own image built continually, independent of a ‘base page’, and therefore can extend its length with minimal limitations. For Semi Set Vertical Blue, I created a motif that spoke to the codified visual language of clipart, selecting generic images of coils, chicken eggs, and golden rings (symbols of evolution, beginnings, and promises), as well as my own mark making. This process enabled me to engage with a new, complex means of production that straddled the line between machine-made and hand-made, deepening my insight into my own relationship with technology.
